The bulldog bat is also called
the fishing or fisherman bat. They range from Mexico to northern
Argentina and roost near the water in hollow trees or crevices in rocks.
They are 98 to 132 mm with a
wingspan of 51cm and weigh 60 to 78 grams. Their head, shoulders and
midback are covered with short, reddish fur, the rest of the bat is hairless.
The bats forage for food at
night using echolocation to find the fish which they catch with their
feet. If knocked into the water it is able to swim, using its wings as
oars.
A postage stamp was
created to honor bulldog bats.
